September 3, 2026: OAK Field Day at Loving Farm where we will be talking about the development of a filter strip along the railroad track in addition to other ways we incorporate conservation on our farm. It is free to attend and our favorite vegan food cart will be here selling her delicious food. I think the turnout is looking good, so if you are thinking about signing up, you might want to secure your spot ASAP.

September 4, 2026: Next Fresh Friday Market on 2^nd Street in Maysville, Kentucky. 6:00 pm- 9:00 pm. Go eat dinner at Babz Bistro or Sol and Sage, or Hippie Burger then come shop the market. It can be a whole thing. The location is just lovely.

Saturday, September 26^th. To celebrate the harvest moon, we are teaming up with Graceful Serenity Yoga for a half day retreat hosted here at the farm filled with flower crown crafting using our homegrown ingredients, yoga, herbal teas and a sound bath! Register here.

B & K Dining will be selling some beautiful food and there will be Hollerhag artwork for sale as well and facepainting!! This will be a ticketed event, which helps cover the cost of the musician.

Hello Flower Lovers!

I am sitting here thinking I should be stressed about all of the things coming up, but in actuality, I am just happy about my life choices, thinking about all of the amazing things we’ve done this (last) week and have upcoming for the next (this week, as you are reading it) and beyond that we are excited about. Not sure what shifted in my brain to have this perspective, but I’ll take it!

We are back home from the brewery on Saturday, where Perriee and I both had the opportunity to work the bike race that our friend Gary organizes as Kentucky Open Road Racing. Our jobs were checking bicycle racers in when they arrived, which entails giving them their race number with pins to attach to their jersey. Then, as they were all finishing, we shouted out their numbers to the other race officials (I say, other because I am officially an official too) as the racers crossed the finish line to solidify their standings in the game. The racers rode 51 or 35 miles (depending on the category) around Robertson Country, with the big finish being up a giant hill that each person negotiated differently to get over the finish line. We donated a couple of bouquets to the organizer to award to the big winners in the women’s categories. It was so hot and there were sneaky ticks here and there hiding in the grass along the road where we were watching from, but we had a blast watching people finish and seeing the awards afterward. The day prior, we went to Turtleback to decorate their sign that sits along the road with some fresh flowers. We are doing a wedding there on Saturday, so we wanted to get a dry-run on the sign in preparation for the big day. Wow, we were so happy with how it turned out. The approach was to have a lemon basil base for it because, as I have said before, if you know Loving Farm, you know we love lemon basil. In terms of floral design, in my opinion, the really mature lemon basil that needs to be cut back anyway is the perfect ingredient for the job. It is tough and durable and ready for a hot August day. We wrapped some twine around the post to use as our anchor and just started popping in stems along it, also jamming some of the woodier stems into the ground around the bottom of the sign. The timing with the race was perfect because we got to work on it Friday and then see how it fared a full 24 hours later We will be there this week getting our other installations done, nervous and excited to show off our locally grown blooms in front of so many people!

It was another fun week at the flower market in Frankfort, which we will not be hitting this week because of the wedding on Saturday. Between that and a back to school order, we are saving our stems to make sure we have everything we need here for the week. We have been planning on how to scale up just ever so slightly for next season to account for weeks like this, but overall Perriee and I are pretty happy with the amount of flowers we have grown this summer. We want more zinnias and I have not told Perriee yet, but I kinda want to get a few more dahlias for next year. Not 1000, maybe 10? That’s reasonable, right? Next year we are also going to plant the cosmos in an entirely different place and plant two packs of Sweet Annie instead of 1. We suspect that the place we put them in this year was possibly too rich of soil and we have other places in the back of the house and across from the flower studio where things have struggled so were going to use those spaces and see how they do.

In other news, we went to a community theater production of Robinhood at the local middle school, Simons, in Fleming County on Friday night. If you missed it, they have two more shows coming up on 8/21 and 8/22. We highly recommend checking it out and supporting this amazing group of humans. The age range of the actors was between 8 months or so to probably 60 something years. We heard about it from one of the families who sell produce at the Fleming County Farmer’s Market who were all represented in the play. Completely unrelated, but I have been working on darning holey socks and Perriee repaired some of her pants by reattaching a button and sewing a rip. And Perriee made a carrot cake this week!

Pride and Flock update: Howard is still on his spring mating schedule, so remains sequestered for most of the days on his side of the run. Hopefully by September he can start to relax a bit. Geesh. All of the critters are staying cool in the heat. Someone (we think Max) is peeing in an undesirable place in the house (not in a litter pan) so we are doing a diversion tactic by putting their snack mat, “Snuffy” in front of it to prevent recurrence. I think it is working.
