August 7, 2026: Next Fresh Friday Market on 2nd Street in Maysville, Kentucky. 6:00 pm- 9:00 pm. Please come see us. Go eat dinner at Babz Bistro or Sol and Sage, then come shop the market. It can be a whole thing.
September 3, 2026: OAK Field Day at Loving Farm where we will be talking about the development of a filter strip along the railroad track in addition to other ways we incorporate conservation on our farm. It is free to attend and our favorite vegan food cart will be here selling her delicious food. Be ready to NERD OUT!
Hello Flower Lovers!
Here to report we made it through last week’s heatwave and the fireworks (the kitties are not fans, if you can imagine.). Perriee and I managed to get our clothesline up and running in spite of the weather! We took several breaks in between steps and many wardrobe changes occurred. It was like a farm-wear fashion week out here. I know you other farmers out there can relate. I’ve seen the social media stories and we are here in solidarity! The humidity was so high the sweat would just drip in your eyes and onto the ground wherever you were working and the clothes are just soaked to the core, on top of all of the seasonal bug bites.
Has anyone seen that episode of the twilight zone where it was really hot in the whole first part, then at the end, the whole twist was that it was super cold the whole time? I was feeling like we were living in that episode this week, having flashbacks of this past winter when we would only go out to check on the ducks and come back inside to warm up.
It is still better than my old life, tethered to my computer like a character from the Matrix for the majority of my waking hours, longingly staring outside, sad I was missing it all.
Based on the “Where to find us/ Important dates” list above, it looks like our out-and-about markets are winding down but we are not. Summer flower season is about to be peaking so we will still be selling the blooms and always can arrange a farm pickup if you need an arrangement or two for a special occasion. If you want a private experience during this part of the year (now through October), hit us up to schedule something. We are looking forward to a couple of private events in the next month that are going to be flower-tastic! A friend is coming by this week to help us get our big bell tent up in the field in preparation for one of them, a family campout night, where we are going to set up all the things to do (volleyball net, croquet, flower crown/fairy wand station, the grill),! The other event is a bouquet making class that is going to be overflowing with fun flowers and yummy snacks. We love our jobs so much that these are the things we get to do at “work”.
In spite of our exploding flower field it was somewhat of a slow week, but we are learning about trusting the process. One of the Chani horoscopes this week I scrolled upon mentioned not to be overly concerned with money this week. It seems to have paid off in other ways, actually. Without spending a dollar this week we have come home with some cucumbers, soap, roma beans, and dried the first of our clothing on our clothesline without using our electric dryer. The air conditioner carried us through the worst of the heatwave and now we are back to windows-open. We ate plates of food full of locally grown ingredients and homemade bread. Our carrots are beautiful and abundant and are feeding us and our friends. Those are the things that make us feel so rich. Really the only thing that we feel lacking in life at the moment are nights away together, so if anyone ever wants to do a farm-cation/pet sit for some sort of trade, let us know! You must love kitties and ducks though. They have a lot to give in return. Mostly love, always some hair.
Another thought we have had lately is to have a farm-stay type of campout here in exchange for a couple hours of work, in return (like, 2 hours per day here, all at once or split over the days?). Our Support Local Links page has a couple of fun places listed on it that you could check out while you are in the area (Babz Bistro, Turtleback Ridge Brewery being two “musts”). We are hoping to get a prototype together with our family camp this summer. We want it to be fun and then, also educational/fulfilling for someone looking to see what it is like running our little farm for a couple of hours. That is like Behind the Scenes of BTS!
Pride and Flock Update: The duckies got extra attention this week with lots of frozen peas, ice blocks in their pools, and some extra shade cloth. We downsized Howard’s space by a section to give the girls some more “run room” and I honestly think they all like it. He is still not able to cohabitate all the time without completely traumatizing them with his libido. Maybe by August? His spring hormones will not quit! Speaking of that, I better go let Dayz out of his apartment. She visited him for a few hours today. I am sure she is ready to get outta there. All of the cats hated the fireworks, but lived to tell the story.
