September 3, 2026: OAK Field Day at Loving Farm where we will be talking about the development of a filter strip along the railroad track in addition to other ways we incorporate conservation on our farm. It is free to attend and our favorite vegan food cart will be here selling her delicious food. Be ready to NERD OUT! Sign up today!
Hello Flower Lovers!
We hope everyone had a nice few days since last meeting here! I cannot believe it is already the start of a new week. The days are really flying by and the flowers are really rolling in so make sure to reach out if you are looking for a bouquet or in need of a bucket of blooms. Our first cuts of short zinnias are happening and they are already getting taller! Gladiolus are blooming (thank you auntie) and our yellow dahlia stars are really happy.
Huge thank you to Ronnie’s Corner Market in Covington for snagging some beautiful flowers from us this week. You might still be able to get some today (Monday or Tuesday, if you are reading this on one of those days) if you need some . Their summer hours are from 9:00 – 7:00 on Monday and Tuesday. Please support their business if you are local to the Northern Kentucky area. They are all about uplifting ours.
By the time you read this, we will have planted all of our summer starts and are going to be looking forward to seeing what to grow for the fall. It is going to be so hot this coming week, so we wanted to get everything in the ground while the weather is somewhat mild. Hopefully we can knock out our clothesline this week too, because I am really not trying to run the dryer when it is 95 degrees outside.
Included in the plants going in are some new splits from my sibling over the weekend: giant rudbeckia, summer snowflakes, solomon seal, some sneezeweed and a root of Russian sage.
Garlic is about ready to come out of the ground as well as our crop of carrots. We will be bringing the carrots to the market in Maysville this Friday so make sure to stop in between 6 and 9 to get some. Catnip flower harvest has begun so there will be jars coming soon to the Kentucky Flower Market with kickers following close behind.
The pollinator patch is absolutely on fire right now with flowers. It is exploding with rudbeckia and bergamot and is peppered with echinacea and asters with the partridge pea ready to follow up behind them all. I never could have imagined it would look this good on its second year. It is a dream come true for sure.
At least one of us is going to the OAK field day on July 7th. If anyone is interested in carpooling, holler! We would love to ride together (might have to drop off ahead of it at the KFM though so we will be a few minutes late, potentially). Regardless, you should sign up for it and we will see you there. Our friend Linelle from our farm class last summer is one of the folks organizing the event and it is going to be FULL of amazing info! This one has a small fee ($5 or $10) but will be worth it! I linked the website to the image below.
In other news, it feels like there is space to spruce up the house and grounds a bit which is perfect timing for some fun private events were hosting here in the coming weeks. One of them is just a campout with some friends at the beginning of August, so we will hopefully be transforming the farm into a family-camp paradise for a night! Stay tuned for more preparations on that, but we hope to finally put up our volleyball net and croquet set and will be busting out the bell tent too. There will be flower crafts and bug hunts. We are so excited!
Pride and flock update: Nothing to report except early morning hairballs and lack of sleep because Max and Tux like to get chatty as the sun is about to come up. Tux will sing the song of his people for about 30 seconds, which reverberates throughout the house. He then waits until you are almost asleep and starts again, to jolt your heart into a pattern of startled anxiety. Sometimes it precludes a trip to the litter pan, sometimes it is the opener for a barf on the carpet. Sometimes he just wants you to get up and feed him breakfast. They sure are lucky they are cute.
