Hi Flowerers!

Happy New Year! It was so much fun picking two giveaway winners this month. We will start posting pictures of the prizes so everyone can join in the excitement a little more. The new year has been warmly welcomed with some of the dearest friends we have on this planet and the vibe of restoration has permeated through the first few days of it all. The days have been spent with a puzzle, outdoor fires, good conversation, and relaxation. Not to mention all of the snacks left behind from the new year celebration we had. Perriee and I both sat on our stationary bike already, a short-term plan for the month. Yes. We also peddled.

It was fun having some great out of town company around for several days, getting us to stay up past our bedtime and sleep in a bit for a few days (which entails getting up at the regular time to feed all of the animals, then going back to bed for a bit, but we take what we can get ok?). We visited some new spots in Maysville, eating at Sol & Sage which was delicious Jamaican-Puerto Rican fusion food with so many vegan and vegetarian options, then checked The Old Pogue Distillery for some bourbon tasting and to love on their cat, Roger.

Somehow, it has also felt pleasantly productive, trying our hand at very intentional winter flower farming. Lisianthus seeds are in and as of this writing we have surely seen one germinated. That is always so exciting to see a seed you have never before grown germinate. Most of the time, it is a bit of a mystery what the seedling will look like, all plants having their own “style” when they emerge from their little cocoons. Somehow you know it when you see it that THAT IS the seedling you were expecting and from that day forward, you always remember what it looks like. Lisianthus seeds are so small, so not surprisingly, the seedlings are small too, planted in pairs in their tray as recommended from this article from Growing for Market which we are following as a guide through this process.

We have some liatris seeds on a trial in a greenhouse pot, the ranunculus is looking strong, and some delphinium has germinated on the kitchen counter. We continue talking to them to stay siked up for the th upcoming year. There are also some aromatic basil sprouting which we will try to nurture into a nice plant on the kitchen counter in time to propagate for the warm weather.

I also just planted about 20 sweet pea seeds in a litter bucket with holes in it, which may be tall enough to grow them in for the season. The plan is to move the bucket next to a trellis once weather permits and let the plants climb on up. Keeping in them in the bucket can give them the environment to grow a nice long root while simultaneously keeping them off the ground away from the cats and ducks. Sweet peas are toxic plants in spite of their seemingly innocuous name. If it appears they will be too crowded, we can split them up into another bucket.

There is definitely a palatable shift in the universe feeling the coming season already ramping up, excited about all of the things we have begun to or plan on growing December 31 our American Holly arrived which is nicely tucked into the field down by Ilex. There is one perfect berry hanging on to it. Our Plant and Heal Arugula seed has arrived which we intend onte going pretty big with in the back of the house, where we have a nice bed of wheat growing in a new bed right now. We hope to sell those greens through a Lexington CSA and maybe directly to some folks out in Maysville for their delicious establishments. Blue Sea Holly will be started this week to get going for the years ahead of us.

Pride update:

The cats have had a big week of company and have handled it all amazingly. George spent New Years Eve in a cat bed in the laundry room just taking in the festivities from a distance. Gray is by far the most nervous of them all and by the end of it all was hanging in the den with all of us from her emotional support cardboard box, not wanting to miss out on the fun. Tux is always down for human company. Give that man a belly rub!
