Hi Flowerers!
Cheers to the winter solstice! Congratulations to everyone. We made it through the darkest of times this year and the light is on its way back. After last night, the days start getting longer again. This season was particularly challenging for me to stay awake past the dark of the early evenings. I will say I feel like I have racked up some rest through it all, which I am grateful for.

Furthermore, I can’t believe the whole winter holiday season is here! We are here for it all. The Christmas cookies are rolling in and sweet treats in general are definitely abundant in the house right now. The road trips were also abundant this week and we are both looking forward to a quiet few days ahead. We went and picked up our remaining items from the Kentucky Flower Market this week since they are closing for the season! Saying that, let us know if anyone local needs any last minute catnip kickers, pinecone ornaments or wreaths. We have a few left! Saying THAT, we both want to thank everyone AGAIN for their support of our little farm. You have showed up for us this season and really, throughout this whole year. We feel the love and marvel at how our customers are just so cool and everything we dreamed of in terms of clientele and the way you all care about the Earth and one another.
This week has been full of overwhelming ourselves with searches of all kinds of plants (hazelnuts, button bush, beautyberry, mock orange, vibernum, etc.), making a big push to acquire some nice woody perennials to see us into our future. We welcomed our first winterberry bush to the farm this week, and named her Ilex. She is currently looking for a beaux, who may be coming from Arbor Day (Mr. Poppins or something like that). At the recommendation of the kindly person working at the flower market, we made it to Sage Garden where we ultimately purchased our new addition. It is the nursery we have passed tens of times on the way to and from dropping off our blooms in Frankfort and were so pleasantly surprised when the GPS took us exactly there!
I would classify this nursery as, “gourmet for all”, seeing their beautiful luscious holly bushes out front, and marveling at all of the beautiful wreath ribbon and cute garden tools on display. After lunch (the initial reason we went there), we wandered into the outdoor tree nursery and asked one of the folks there if they had any winterberry left and he found the last one in the back that happened to fall within our price range! We also came out with a couple of packs of flower seeds too because we are only human.

Here at home there was a private wreath making day which ended up turning into a farm to table brunch. When I tell you we will have snacks, this is what I am talking about. There was cake. There were latkes. We had some duck egg frittata with some farm raised “sun dried” tomatoes. The lemon basil tea was amazing, and the wreaths everyone made were gorgeous! We even managed to sneak in a hike with some friends the day prior over at Sunflower Sundries. It felt good getting my heart and lungs engaged in the cool weather with amazing people.

Pride update (meow): We are celebrating one year of caring for Mamma, Mia, and Baby who we picked up on December 17, 2024. They have been a complete joy getting to learn about and care for and have provided so much sustenance to us with their delicious eggs. They are still laying one per day, even through this cold weather. We are so blessed.
Mia the Rouen is the least shy of the three, with her little lazy eyelid that had us so worried last spring, thinking she had an infection. No, its just her eye. She makes it easy (for a duck- she isn’t jumping into your arms or anything) to care for her though, being pretty cool about picking her up and loving on her. Mamma is the smallest in body, largest in spirit, being the sassiest of the three. Another Khaki Campbell, she tolerates Howard the best and seems to be in charge of the little throuple. Baby, the white one, a Blue Swede we think, has the cutest crooked tail and is by far the most timid of the three. All of them are absolutely part of the family now and have added so much spice to our lives. Adopting affords more insight into temperaments and relationships and overall health which is hard to predict in ducklings. These ladies are the best!
